First Day of Preschool

preschool

First day of preschool.

Wow.

My son is in preschool.

I've been feeling so awful that, honestly, I had almost no emotions regarding his first day. I'd purchased the required and optional supplies. He has a lunch box. He has a backpack. I didn't pick out a special outfit for his first day – which is very un-Julianna like.

We got up early that morning so everyone could get showered and dressed.

Grant had breakfast... (waffles which he calls “awfuls”)

I got everything together upstairs...

Once he was dressed.. and our photo-session was complete... off we went... in two cars because Drew couldn't miss the first day.

Grant was very excited to play with the vacuum in his classroom... he talked all weekend about preschool and the vacuum. (His classroom has a toy vacuum... he loved playing with it at the meet the teacher thing last Friday. He sees me vacuum like five days a week so he loved a smaller, kid-sized vacuum that didn't make any noise).

When we pulled in to the school, there were a lot of other parents there but we were able to find parking.

The time came... and we took him back to his classroom.

Mrs. Michelle was there waiting... as was the fabled vacuum.

Unfortunately, we had an incident involving another little girl who also liked playing the vacuum. There were tears.

Once he was pretty settled we said goodbye.

And he started to freak out again.

He hadn't realized that school didn't involve mom and dad being there.

Once the true freak-out started, Drew & I said a firm, reassuring goodbye and left.

We could hear the crying down the hall... and then him saying “NO DON'T WANT TO COLOR! NO VACUUM! NO PLAY-DOUGH.”

Great.

Drew & I said quick goodbyes to each other (probably so that we wouldn't see the tears in each other's eyes and set off some serious waterworks in the parking lot) and got in our separate cars and went our separate ways. Drew has to say goodbye to Grant every day. I've never done it.

I got in my car and started sobbing.

I cried all the way to Sonic... where I found comfort in a Route 44 Diet Dr. Pepper.

Then, I headed home.

The light on the answering machine was blinking.

OH. CRAP.

No, not the preschool....

it was Drew.

Wanting to make sure the preschool hadn't called.

Too cute.

Drew is a wonderful, concerned, involved dad and it makes me love him all the more.

Anyway, I sat at my computer doing emails and crying until 10am.

Then I scrubbed bathrooms, vacuumed, dusted, cleaned the whole house... went to the bank... went to the grocery store...

And then it was time to get in line to pick up my little sweetie.

I was third in line to pick up.

I waited FOR.EVE.ER

okay, like ten minutes.

But still.

They brought out the first kiddo.

Crying.

Then they brought out some twins.
Crying.

No Grant.

They brought out another kid.

Crying.

No Grant.

Finally, Grant comes out.

BEAMING.

He says “MOM, I WIKE SCHOOL!”

And gets in the car after being SMOTHERED in kisses and tears and me saying how much I missed him.

So Grant's first day of preschool is an absolute success.

He's so excited to go back. SO excited.

And I'm excited for him.
